Obligatory, 6.24.19

The well is a bit dry right now.   In order to keep putting up material, I'll have to rely a bit upon memory.  A few days ago, I found something on the web about George Will comparing Trump supporters to cockroaches.

Of course in this day and age, it is customary to get outraged at such a comparsion.  But I'll wave that off.  However, it does give me an idea of something I could post about George Will.

Like I said this is from memory.  So, it may be subject to error.  So here goes.  George Will liked Ronald Reagan.  He wrote something about Reagan once, if memory serves, in which he said that Reagan was the captain that calmed the seas.  A lot nicer than comparing Reagan's supporters to cockroaches.

So maybe he thinks that Trump is the captain that enrages the seas.  Funny thing is, he may be right in a sense.  But in the end, Trump will calm the seas just as Reagan did.  He just approaches the problem in a different manner.

Reagan handled the media much differently than Trump.  Trump will go toe-to-toe with the media.  He can do that without a lot of heat and unpleasantness.  But the media keeps after him anyway.  Yet, Trump doesn't back off.  Eventually, I think Trump will overcome the media by wearing them down.  On the other hand, Reagan tended to avoid the media.  He didn't give interviews the way that Trump has recently with Stephanopolous and Chuck Todd.  The media can throw their heaviest hitters at Trump, and it just bounces off him.  In contrast, Reagan just used a charm offensive.  It worked for Reagan, but will a different style work for Trump?

It could.

There was a recent kerfuffle about what Trump said to Stephanopolous.  But the polls show no movement against the president, in fact, his polls are somewhat better.  That's what I mean by wearing them down.  He can take their hits, and keep on going.  In fact, he even gets stronger as time goes along.

Eventually, the media will tire of trying to bring him down like this, and just try to wait him out.

During the meantime, the seas will calm down.

Will may not like Trump, but it isn't because of his style with the media.  It is based more upon substance, which is at the heart of the Democrat opposition as well.  The Democrats want open borders and the GOP want free trade.  However, Trump has them here as well.  They'll figure out that they cannot take him down with phony issues, and then Trump will beat them on the real ones.
