Notes from the road yesterday

Notes for my next post the asteroid that nasa proposes to capture weighs 500 tons.

If 30 percent of it is water this will yield 300000 pounds. In order to supply three astronauts, you will need ten times as much for a trip to Mars and back.

Therefore you will need 10 missions of that type, are ten times less supplies.

Another note is that I want to tell the difference between pounds feet and foot pounds.  Pound feet is for thrust.  Okay, that looks dumb, but it does confuse me.

Update:

Part 4 of a series.  The series is about using Hunter gas guns as propulsion to and from asteroids in order to exploit them for their resources.  Part 3 was here.

I am wondering if a small nuclear reactor is placed on board to heat the hydrogen for the gas gun.

Instead of using gas as propellant, use a solid.  Maybe water.  Don't like to use water, but it's advantage is that it will vaporize in space.  Don't want solid projectiles whizzing around in space that may become a hazard.

As I recall, you don't need a lot of heat to the hydrogen in order to get some decent velocity out of it.  Hunter said room temperature could get escape velocity from the moon, for christ's sake.

Maybe you can compress the hydrogen without heating it.  Then use it to propel an object like a small piece of ice.

Heating a gas for propulsion is very energy intensive.  Also very inefficient to an extreme.  By using a compressed gas to propel ice, the energy consumption and mass consumption can be much more efficient.

The Nuclear Rocket, part 2: Bussard's Aspen SSTO

Time for another break in reading the book at page 114.  Actually, it is not the only break, as I have had to do other chores.

Anyway, Robert Bussard came up with a Single Stage to Orbit (SSTO) which would have utilized a Nuclear Thermal rocket design as an upper stage.  A conventional aircraft type would taxi down a runway and take off to an altitude sufficient to allow the nuclear engine to start.  From there it would proceed to orbit.

An internet write up about this project can be found here.

A previous post about a nuclear SSTO can be found here.

The Nuclear Rocket, part 1

Reading the book now and I'm up to p.82 or so.

I'll take a break from the reading here and make a few comments.

  1. I'm still struck at the very inefficient use of energy of rockets.  It seems like heating a gas for reaction mass is part of the reason for the inefficiency.  This doesn't have much to do with the book, but is a reaction to his assertion that nuclear power is the only answer.  Just saying that maybe that isn't so.  But that doesn't mean I'm opposed to nuclear power.  Just the use of gas as a reaction mass.
  2. He wants Congress to pass a law setting up something he calls "NucRocCorp"- short for nuclear rocket corporation.  You need the government involved because they will be handling highly enriched uranium, which requires government supervision and security.  You can make a bomb with this uranium, so you don't want to mess around with it.
  3. Maybe I'm seeing a little of what Trent Waddington was talking about in his negative review of the book.  It's a tough slog.
  4. I'm not being negative about the book, believe it or not.  I figured I was in the choir, so to speak.  I don't need to be converted.  But if he loses guys like Trent, he is screwing up.

Got the book

James Dewar's book, The Nuclear Rocket.

Read the Intro by Robert Bussard.   The same Robert Bussard of the polywell fusion concept, by the way.

Just wanted to make a note here about something else, because I didn't know about it and it struck me.  One megawatt equals 50 lbs of thrust in a rocket.   Just goes to show you how much power is in one of these things.  You need nearly a gigawatt in order to get a medium sized rocket engine.

Mind-boggling.

Something Sinister Behind the Recent Drop in the Gold Price

By David Levenstein, Kitco Commentary

I sincerely believe that these financial leaders are trying to scare the individual investor out of bullion. It is an act of desperation. The central bankers are so deep in debt the only way out will be to default or debase their currencies. And, as the US dollar is still the world’s reserve currency, the Fed is trying to convince everyone that the dollar is the only the only safe haven, not gold. As the Fed continues to print huge quantities of money, other countries are abandoning the use of the dollar as international payment as their game of deception will not fool everyone.[ emphasis added]

Gun control bill hits brick wall in Senate - John Bresnahan

Comment:

The vote is symbolic of the wide gulf that separates the country.  The people on each side of this issue may as well be from different countries.  The arguments for and against the bill are simply not heard.

Those who say that there's no such thing as free will should think about this situation.  When it comes to what you believe in, there certainly a free will.  Otherwise, such a wide gulf of opinion could not exist.

When it comes to solutions, you cannot negotiate a belief.  Until people get beyond that, there can be no solutions.

The entire article puts into perspective the mad rush to find someone to blame when they don't know what has happened yet.  The event is going to be politicized, if it has not already been politicized.

That you have a leftist regime in place should tell you something about the ultimate outcome of this "investigation".  They probably won't find a suspect, because they can't afford it to be a non-white group.  They are probably going to look for a white guy to blame and if they can't find one, they'll blow it all off.

More about being "severe"

This has been on my mind today, but making a post about seemed to get difficult as soon as I started on the task.

Thoughts seems to come easy, but expressing them in words not so easy.

So, when I got home, I decided to look a bit closer at this Rob Portman flip-flop in support of same-sex marriage.

You see, his son flipped him to support same-sex marriage.  How does that happen?  How does the son flip the father, but not the other way around?

After reading the story, I still think the Senator failed his son.  His son had an explanation which he gives on Huffington, in which he related his shame at who he was, but that went away.  His shame went away soon after he told his parents of his same-sex attraction.  Now he thinks he has to get married to somebody of his own sex.  He went the whole hog for the left-wing position.  He rejected the moral argument.  His parents did not guide to the right.  Evidently, they did not try.  He tries to take a middle ground and encourages everyone else to do the same.  But you can't.  There's no middle ground here.  It is either wrong or it isn't.

For those who think it isn't wrong, they enter a different kind of world.  There is no escaping this.  You can't play it both ways.  A man can't serve two masters.

Being "severe" must mean holding on the one true view.  Incompatible views cannot both be true.  One or the other has to be wrong or false.  There's no middle ground.  It cannot be compromised.

Our society today does not stigmatize homosexuality as it once did.  Perhaps that is more humane.  But does that mean that homosexuality must be put on the same level as heterosexuality?  If so, why is that so?  For those who think so, they must reject the teachings of religion.  This has been taught for thousands of years.  Now all of a sudden, what has been taken for granted as being true for so long, is now false?  What was considered moral is now immoral?  Just because of what some political activists say?

I think Rob Portman's son is very confused and Rob Portman himself is probably worse.  He is unfit to lead and it is a good thing that Romney didn't put him on the ticket.  That's true whether or not he would have helped Romney win or not.  The Republican party is confused and so is most of the country.  There's no reason to be confused.  Wrong is wrong.  They can't hold to the right?  Is the father the master or the son?  Who teaches, the father or the son?  Who guides, the father or the son?  Who leads the nation---those who hold to the right, or those who refuse to be guided to the light and sink into darkness?

This country is on the wrong path in more ways than one.  Hopefully enough people will come to understand it that way and turn away from these wrong things before it is too late.

Tesla Actually Strikes a Blow Against the Corporate State

Coyote Blog

Government protections of middle men in the auto business (states generally do the same in the liquor business) are a classic example of crony capitalism. Car dealers tend to have a lot of sway with politicians, not to mention with local media for who they are generally the largest advertisers, so they are able to engineer special privileges for themselves. Congrats to Tesla for taking this on.

Conservatives are "severe"?

Do you remember in the debates last year when Romney said something to the effect that he was a "severe" conservative?

I thought about this yesterday and I thought, no way conservatives are severe.  The severity comes from the left, not the right.  Just look at the response from this bombing or any other event that occurs in this nature.  The left can't wait and find out what happen before they start accusing the right of being guilty.

No, the right can't do anything.  Can't say anything.  Can't even think anything.  Even if the right doesn't do anything, they get blamed anyway.  They are so beat down and intimidated that there's no way they can be "severe".  If anything, they are severely intimidated by the left.

Actually, a little severity from the right could be a good thing.  If for no other reason, to balance off the left.

Markets sold off yesterday

Lost in the news of the Boston Bombing was the market sell-off yesterday.

The Dow lost 265 and gold was pounded under $1400.

The snowstorm in hell may be shortlived.  The Dow should be rising in order for the snowstorm to continue.  Maybe there's a change in the "weather"?

I smell the odor of bull excrement.

Boston Bombing

It is obligatory to report something on the bombs, so here goes.

Just when you thought that it may be wise to avoid the political aspect of this, there are a bunch of those in the media who are all over the political angle.  Some people don't know when to stfu.

Are there any suspects?  It would seem to behoove people not to speculate about who and what this is about until more information becomes available.

There was a report that they had a suspect, but this seems doubtful to me.

On first blush, it appears to be a small, local affair.  Probably a lone wolf operation.  Small bombs in many locations.  Several didn't explode.

It doesn't look like something big and coordinated, like 9-11.

Traffic

Took a long time to get through traffic this early evening.  This made me wonder why.  It has been a pattern lately, so this required a little study.

Just before 9/11, my last delivery of the day took place at Hobby Airport, which is a little southeast of downtown.  I could get home consistently in about 35 minutes.  Now, such a trip would take close to an hour, I estimate.  What could have possibly made such a big difference?  Has Houston's population grown that much?  I had thought that it didn't.

As a matter of fact, Houston proper hasn't really grown all that much in the last 30 years.  However, in just the last 20 years, nearly 2 million new residents have made the metro area their home.  I think that is what is driving all this traffic.  People have moved to the outlying regions and are commuting into town.  This is clogging up the freeways and making the traffic much worse.

As what has been the case through much of its most modern history, Houston's growth is outpacing its ability to keep up.  Despite all of the extra freeway lanes and such, they still get too crowded.

More freeways, or more  mass transit?  Or both, perhaps.

Another thing this town could use is a rebuilding of its streets.  The streets are in poor shape in too many places.

Immigration proposal

From yours truly.  I've got to make this quick, so I apologize if there are any errors.

The illegals don't want citizenship.  They just want to work here.  Okay, they can be given that if they earn it.  That's right.  What the left wants is to give them citizenship.  But they should never get that.  They should be able to work here though, and work here legally if they meet certain conditions

  1. They have to learn the US Constitution.  Especially the Bill of Rights.  It seems that Latinos are prone to electing tyrants to office.  Hopefully, if they can be taught to respect why the country they are living in is better because it is free, then maybe this can be absorbed and they won't bring this infection here.
  2. They have to learn what the rule of law is and why they can't be given citizenship for breaking the law.
  3. They have to learn why Marxism is bad.  Why it never delivers what it promises and can never deliver what it promises.
  4. They have to stay out of trouble.
  5. They have to stay gainfully employed.
  6. They have to forfeit certain benefits in perpetuity.
Those are measures that are usually spoken in reference to giving citizenship---citizenship cannot be given away.  Moreover, citizenship should not ever be given.  The only reason to give citizenship is the vote---which they don't even want.  They can't be trusted with the vote because of the way they got here---by breaking the law.  Furthermore, it is political suicide for the Republicans to gift the Democrats this political advantage.  The fact that many are willing to do this shows a complete naivete, or if they don't know better, or a wicked sort of treachery if they do.  The fact of the matter is that the Republicans should know better, so voting for giving citizenship to this group should not ever be entertained.

Citizenship can be granted under exceptional circumstances, but these are not exceptional.  These conditions listed above are minimal for restoring legality.  The gift of citizenship can only be granted if it is truly earned---not just to pay a debt to society for breaking the law.

Boxer–Sanders Carbon Tax Would Empower EPA to Crush Booming Energy Economy

Right Side News

Makes perfect sense for the left to tax and regulate the one thing that is working in this economy---the energy business.

It won't do what it claims to do.  That's not the purpose of it.  The purpose of it is to increase the power of Democrats.  There's no help for the environment.  That's an Orwellian ruse to con the public into accepting it.  Works every time.

Equality, it's a beautiful thing

A few things that seem to stick out like a sore thumb with respect to the Eurozone crisis

  1. The Eurozone loves taxes.  Higher taxes are the answer to every problem.
  2. The Eurozone loves equality, even though they don't practice it.
  3. For the left, nothing works like failure.  If something fails, just do more of the same.

‘Joe’s Law’: Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Strategy to Derail Amnesty Enrages the Left

Quote:

There is nothing to stop other states from following Joe’s lead. Arizona-style employer sanctions and ID theft laws, with Sheriffs willing to prosecute illegals for felony crimes, is the model for states whose legislatures want to enforce the rule of law...when of course he is merely doing what every Sheriff, police chief and ICE ought to be doing: enforcing the laws on the books.

It's all about the vote.  Instead of catering to the illegals, as the Republican establishment wants to do, they should be encouraging other states to do what Arpaio is doing.

Instead of vainly hoping to get their votes, which they won't ever do that, the Republicans could at least stop themselves from being swamped by a tsunami of these voters, who will definitely vote Democrat.

The Time Is Right: SpaceX Should Go Public (BA, LMT)

At the very least, I find it telling that millionaire Dennis Tito, the first space tourist in American history, has outlined plans for a 501-day privately funded mission to Mars using SpaceX's Falcon Heavy launch rocket combined with a Dragon spacecraft.

Spent part of yesterday listening to a re-broadcast of a Space Show in which Tito name was mentioned.  It was in connection with the concept of Maslow Windows, which describes a period of transformation, such as the Apollo Era.  Dr Cordell, the guest on that Space Show episode, claims that the next Maslow Window is about to open at about the year 2015.  Cordell says the public is ready for something exciting like Tito's proposed mission to Mars.
