Same sex marriage is being cast in the light of injustice, the injustice of unequal treatment when equality is guaranteed before the law.
But the law doesn't guarantee equality at all. If so, then convicts are treated equally, right? But they are not, nor should they be. Convicts are convicts because they violated the law and are punished for it. If the law is unjust, the conviction should be removed, but if the law is just and the conviction is just, the forfeiture of equality is just.
Why should homosexuals be considered equal as a group? No homosexual union can produce children in the way that a heterosexual union can. If it cannot produce children, then how is it that the union should be considered equal? Inasmuch as the union cannot produce children, isn't it in the interest of society not to encourage such unions, and encourage heterosexual unions instead? Societies cannot exist without children, yet this type of union precludes such an outcome. Why encourage it? Why should a society commit suicide?
But one may object: homosexuals can have children through artificial means. That may be true, but their physical act cannot. One has consider that the only motivation for the union is to have "moral" sex, because if it is legal, it must be "moral". Morality isn't synonymous with law anyway, but that is what at least some of these people are looking for--- legitimacy. Being legitimate may be considered as being just as good. But they are already "legit". Nobody is going to put them in jail for their sexual practices.
If they are looking to gain approval from society, this won't necessarily work. It may do the exact opposite. People may feel imposed upon if it runs counter to their own beliefs. You may try to force someone to "love" you, but may just end up with the opposite.
The so-called leaders think this type of decision may make them appear enlightened, but that too is a mistake. Frankly, I think it makes them look ridiculous. That's because they cannot do even the slightest bit of reasoning, which is what I did here.
Our leadership looks more and more ridiculous by the day, in my opinion.
