Too many folks want to focus in on the irrelvancies. Lincoln had a hard time finding a competent General in order to fight a war to preserve the Union. Lincoln chose Grant, but the complaints came in anyway. Grant won some victories in the west, and it must have impressed the President, as other Generals seemed to fail miserably against the Southerners.
So the objection was about his drinking. Lincoln replied that it was his understanding that Grant no longer had that problem. But if that was not the case, he would inquire about and see what Grant was drinking. Then he would give all of his Generals a barrel of it.
What did drinking have to do about winning battles? But those folks who complained about Grant's alleged drinking were worried about that, instead of focusing their attention on how to beat General Lee.
Why bring up that story? Well, doesn't it seem that people like to focus on the irrelevant when it comes to whatever? The so-called conservatives want to focus on character issues in those that they don't like. It would seem that they should focus on how to get people into office who will actually do something about those problems. But they'd rather focus on the irrelevancies.
Yet people talk about nothing getting done. Ten to one, the complainers are focusing upon completely irrelevant things.
