Possession is 9/10th of ownership, it has been said. Trouble is, in order to get to Mars with a chemical rocket, you're going to have serious logistical problems. Therefore, the problem solves itself if nukes are kept out of the picture. So the problem is really the nukes, not the real estate. Musk's chance of success with his rockets are probably not that good, despite the appearances. He needs nuclear power, but that will be a problem with governments.
