The Apoplexy Over the Trump Tariffs is the "Trillions at Stake" Part of Our Decade's Long Discussion

CTH ... "Long Discussion"

Here is a "long discussion" which will give some explanation for what's happening.

I won't try to parse it all, or much of it. One thing I know is that the business as usual strategy isn't working, and I never supported big trade deficits. Heck, I voted for Dick Gephardt in the Dem Primaries for Prez back in 1988 on this very thing. Trade deficits were really ramping up back then, and becoming a political issue.

Clinton then added China to the mix in the nineties. The trade deficit went bat-guano crazy thereafter, and here we are.

Reaction to the reaction to the reaction (to the tariffs)

---Just saw that a "conservative" group is going to sue Trump over the tariffs. Oh, brother! Now the "conservatives" are going to go to the Lawfare playbook. It just shows to go ya.

--- There's another side to the story, not just the "enemedia" side. Reports are that Trump is okay with the tariffs and the responses he's getting from many other countries. The media is just playing the FUD game.

--- The reaction on Wall Street isn't good, but yours truly could care less about Wall Street. Wall Street is a casino, for crying out loud. If Wall Street went to Hell, I don't think the Devil would want them.

--- If Trump can get a bunch of bilateral trade deals that would improve our trading posture, then I'm all for it. But the System may have something to say about it. Screw the System, since they are screwing us anyhoo. Trump DOES need to keep the public behind him. If he loses the people, then the politicians and bureaucrats will sense blood in the water, and then you know what happens after that.

--- So the window of opportunity may close quickly.

--- A quick comment upon the trade posture--- even critics admit that the US is drawing down its manufacturing capacity through its trading policy. This has been true ever since the end of WW II. That explains a few things that may not be commonly understood. Of course, the enemedia won't be tellin you that. You have to do some homework, and will people do that???

--- This may be a riverboat gamble. Reagan did one with his tax cuts. Clinton did one by getting China into the trading regime, and thus made China a superpower. The idea there was that China would become more like us. How's that one working out???

A foolish consistency... (reposted)

4/4/25:

To understand this post, you'll probably have to click on the bold face link in the post below. It's another post, written about Milton Friedman, and his ideas concerning trade surpluses and trade deficits. This is what I was referring to when I mentioned "foolish consistency". It turns out that Milton Friedman's ideas were taken at face value, and we really decided to trade all our know how and human capital in exchange for a few cheap baubles. Now that is foolish.

4/10/16:

Who said that?  It is a quote of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

I was thinking of that in respect to what I just wrote about Milton Friedman, and how it would be wonderful for us if we could get the rest of the world to accept paper dollars for goods.

It is foolishly consistent to take Economic Theory to its logical conclusion to the extent he did, and then try to justify it on the basis of economics alone.  You could not make that scenario work in the real world, because not all people are fools.  If you give away your power and strength in exchange for a few baubles, then you are the fool.  This is what these free traders are doing.  They don't know the difference between wealth and money.  Wealth is know how.  Money is just a medium of exchange.  It can only have value if it is backed by true wealth, which is the collective know how of a people.  If a nation neglects its people in exchange for baubles from abroad, then that nation can not exist for long.

The conclusion follows, if you are courageous enough to face the truth.

FUD, and it isn't in the form of Elmer J. Fudd

2:14 PM:

Trump's tanking the markets on purpose?

If you ax me, I don't know how this will be received, you know what I mean, Vern?

11:52 AM:

This could be ungood. I asked Grok ( X's AI ) if the tariffs were actually reciprocal.

11:28 AM:

There's a claim out there that the tariffs are not reciprocal, as advertised. If that's true, then my support for it is suspended until further review. All of the tariffs and the corresponding tariffs being imposed on American goods needs to be reviewed.

If Trump has done what he is accused of, they will have a real issue for a change. He'd better reconsider if that's the case. Otherwise, the financial beating will backfire in a bad way, and rather bigly.

4/3/25:

The Democratic plan is to generate a lot of FUD--- an acronym for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.

Of course the stock market fall is designed for that. Let's spread tons and tons of fear because of a falling market. Let's stoke up the fears of job losses and recession. The uncertainty is needed in order to paralyze the political class into not doing anything, and continuing more of the same.

A restructuring is needed. How can it be in the interest of the people of this country to let other countries continue massive tariff structures against American goods?

Nobody should be surprised that a restructuring should cause some near-term dislocations. Adjustments have to be made.

Let's see where we are when the mid-terms come around. If the Dems could freeze Trump into inaction, which they are doing with their lawfare, they can make him look ineffective. The doubts about Trump could put Trump out of the game for good.

Anyway, that is a short discussion of what I think where some of the political strategies are. It shouldn't be a surprise.

"Hot ass mess"

4/3/25:

She can keep on talking. Maybe we shouldn't help them out, know what I mean, Vern?

3/26/25:

There's a hot ass mess in Texas, but "Hot wheels" ain't it, honey.

2:25 PM:

Yep. If the opposition in Canada, if they had one, would talk like this, they'd win. Maybe big, too.

People in this country, the good 'ol USA, are being told to hate Trump. If Trump hasn't done anything else, he has opened up the opportunity for the country to see things as they really are. That's because WE THE PEOPLE are being lied to without stint. So God Bless Trump for allowing the truth to be heard for a change. Hopefully it will last awhile longer.

LPP Fusion getting ready for the latest run at aneutronic fusion

4/3/25:

1:50 PM:

LPP is having a fundraiser about now. They could be really close, or maybe not. Anyhow, during this time, there's a lot of volatility in the investment markets. Hear tell, the stock market is having a bad day. A helluva time to invest, eh? People are going ape-shit with FEAR.

But that may be the best time to buy. Buy when everyone is selling, and sell when everybody's buying. The stock market is rather frothy, and it had to happen at some point. Now's the time people are selling. Not necessarily a good time to sell. Not necessarily a good time to buy either, but that all depends upon what you're buying and why.

9:37 AM:

This may or may not pan out. Latest shot at a near record yield, without it even being a "real shot". The main attraction is yet to come, and it's on the way soon. Or so they say.

Big Bird flaps his beak, and MAGA is born

I thought that Chaos Theory explained it all... Big Bird?

These guys are saying something that completely contradicts what the media is saying

Tesla's going bankrupt! Tesla's going bankrupt! Not so fast... The media is full of sh!t anyway.

The country's future awaits the verdict

4/2/25:

It looks like a loss in Wisconsin, but the real loss was a few years ago when a GOP judge ran against MAGA. That might as well have been kiss of death. It confirms once again the whole point of the "moderate" GOP is to inflict defeat upon the majority of the party, which is MAGA. It's been either MAGA or conservative all along, and the "moderates" hold the reins as long as the public allows it. It's happening in Texas, too. It wasn't a totally bad night, as the majority in Wisconsin are still for sane policies, but this may have already been tilted in the liberal's favor anyhow. A win would have been a flip.

You might as well call it another steal, because that is what you will likely get in Wisconsin in the future. Unless something changes, of course.

4/1/25:

There's a big election, or one that they say is big. It's in Wisconsin. I don't follow their politics very much. Seems like I don't follow my state of Texas' politics all that much. All the focus is on Washington DC. What's true in my case may translate into the general case.

The people in the various states may be thinking that they've got things wired because Trump is in the White House. But there are 50 states, and all these states are needed in order to keep in hand the reins of power.

Anyway, that is why this election is important. If the Dems win that election, they'll gain some advantage in the Wisconsin political situation, which can translate into the Federal situation. Generally speaking, if you take your eye off the ball, you may well drop it.

The Democrats are being successful in scaring people about DOGE and so forth. I know. I just had a conversation with somebody that convinced me that they are being successful with their fear campaign about Social Security and so forth.

If the Democrats succeed, it will have that fear factor that they are ginning up. The sad thing is that there's so many people who are letting themselves being manipulated into believing false things. I rely upon Social Security, and I don't believe that there's anything to fear. If Trump and Co. start messing around with that in the way that they are being accused of, they will lose massive support, I can tell you. Most of what support the Democrats may be gaining is from the fear that they are generating of something that isn't even true. The fear mongers are not doing these people any good, nor the rest of us.

But that is where we are today.

May you live in interesting times

4/1/25:

Today was rather hectic. I've had just enough time to do one update to another post, and an update here. Interesting times.

3/31/25, 9:46 AM:

The "interesting" part is not what it may appear to be. Anyway, I've been having some interesting times lately.

So posting may be lite for the time-being. Things are interesting in my neighborhood. More accurately, it could get interesting. As for today, I've been busy with some chores, while keeping my eyes open.

Not trying to be dramatic. A thing is what it is.

12:19 PM:

I interrupt this interruption to bring the news that the interruption is suspended for the moment. Consequently it will get boring for a little while, as I resume the unshelduled shedule.

Solve for X: Rob McGinnis on global water scarcity ( reposted from 2012)

4/1/25, 9:37 AM :

This was a long time ago, so it may take a bit of digging to find out more. Basically, he sold his tech to a Chinese group! The Chinese couldn't make anything out of it, so they went belly up. Not sure where the story went from there, but still looking...

10:26 AM:

Leo AI doesn't seem to know much about it. A few clicks through what's out there seems to show that this is a very complex topic with no one-size-fits-all type of solution. Still looking.

UK's Modern Water is another name mentioned. However, there's nothing all that new being mentioned on this website.

11:00 AM:

Here's one of the more recent videos of Rob McGinnis. Why would I be interested in this greenie weenie stuff? If it makes sense economically, then there's no need for draconian regulations to put it into large scale practice. But get this: It might make sense on Mars. Guess who's going to Mars?

3/31/25:

The original post seems to have gone missing, but there's this copy. So I am wondering: Whatever happened with this tech? It would sure come in handy, you know?

So, I found the post again, and I'm reproducing it yet again for future reference. I've used the IDEA for some of my ideas about energy. The smelling salts are produced the same way, and can be a way to move the hydrogen from place to place. You need to make the hydrogen and then combine it with nitrogen in order to get the ammonia. Ammonia is toxic, so making it into smelling salts makes it harmless. ( until you release the ammonia )

If you release the ammonia in small amounts, then you will limit the damage it could do, you see? Therefore, you could store the smelling salts indefinitely, and then when you want the ammonia, it can be recovered easily.

12/29/16: note:

Smelling salts can desalinate water and be a source of ammonia for a fuel cell, that produces even more water and electricity.

Now all you need is to separate the ammonia from the carbon dioxide.  There's a way...

Big Bird: A Metaphor for Obama

3/31/25:

What about this old post? It's over a dozen years old, and Obama is no longer in the White House. In fact, when I made this post back then, he was still in his first term. Good 'ol Romney was attempting to oppose him, but Romney did not succeed. Why not success? He was trying too hard to be like the guy he was running against, that he couldn't bring himself to honestly oppose him.

That's why the so-called "right" lost all the time. The same formula is taking place in Canada at the moment. The guy running against the Liberal party guy, isn't really opposing him. So the Liberals are likely to win in Canada because the so-called right winger refuses to be any different than the leftard that he is running against. Up until recently, the Liberals were very unpopular. What made them popular this time? By picking a fight with the Orange Man Bad. The Canadians are hopeless unless they find their way out of their bamboozlement. It is not any accident that people get bamboozled. It's the plan. Chew on that on, if you dare.

10/12/12:

Bruce Johnson, American Thinker

He makes a case that Obama is Big Bird.  Everybody seems to be Big Bird.  I was thinking that John McCain was Big Bird.  Especially with his attempts to become a member in good standing with the press is reminiscent of the video showed earlier on this blog.  It was Big Bird who made a caricature of himself in order to try to become a member of the Good Birds Club.  Like Big Bird in that video, McCain really does like to get the approval of the left, so much so that he earns the suspicion of conservatives because he plays up to the critics of conservatism.  So, if McCain is really conservative, why doesn't he just be happy with the way he is?

It all depends on how you take Big Bird, I guess.  He seemed to me to be a Big Wuss in that video.  All too often, Republicans like John McCain act like Big Bird did in that video.

Ground News says that this is a "red" blindspot

This is not written to dispute it, although I've written many times that the Marxist model is not one you should use if you are a sincere conservative. However, not everyone on the "right" is blind to the significance of this election. You may notice that the political left is definitely not blind to it.

Interpret this how you will. My interpretation is that we are poised on the knife's edge. The difference maker here could be how much people actually care about the truth, and are willing to do something about it.

Comment:

The USA has always been more free than average. However, if you are a commie pinko lib, you'll probably dispute that. That's because commie pinko libs have their own "reality", and such reality only applies to the moment, and could change at any moment. In other words, the commie pinko libs are full of sh!t.

P.S.: (pay attention please)

This reminds me of the State of the Union that Ronald Reagan gave in the late eighties. He said three words in the US Constitution that makes America different from all other countries---"WE THE PEOPLE". We the people tell the government what it can and cannot do. Everywhere else, it is the other way around.

Senator Kennedy quizzes liberal kook

More proof that those on the left are either stupid or evil. I'd say in the case of this woman (if that is what she identifies as), that she claims the First Amendment doesn't really mean what it says. Oh, no. It means something else. Evidently, this is also the case with the Second Amendment. However, the Constitution, according to her, does says things that clearly aren't there. Fancy that.

She cannot believe what she is saying, or she's nuts or stupid. The First Amendment says quite plainly that "Congress shall make no law". There's not much to argue there. Likewise, the Second Amendment says "the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". But these people will try to argue otherwise. No wonder that they cannot define what a woman is. They're either mentally ill ( stupid ) or evil.

Never heard of Casey Putsch. Tucker Carlson interviews him about his car, so I looked a bit further.

And here's a video where he shows his road test of his car.

So there it is. Does his car really do what he says? It appears so, but this hasn't been independently verified. However, he does do a road test with Teslas, Corvette, and the Viper. All of these cars are considered fast cars, but they aren't any better than what he shows here. For what it is worth, ya'll.

Is Elon Musk's Business Empire Collapsing?

There may well be cracks developing. However, a lot of this latest bad PR is a result of people ( and nations ) who have an axe to grind. However, that doesn't explain it all. There are some problems developing.

SpaceX seemed to be the most promising of Musk's ventures. I don't care that much about Tesla, but even that could be turned around. Mainly for this commentary, SpaceX practically owns the launch business. Nobody can touch their resuable first stages, and the fully reusable Starship could revolutionize the space industry. At the moment, things might be a bit dicey, and the warning lights are flashing on the dashboard. If Musk isn't careful, he could blow it. Just my opinion. The video below seems to leave you with a "yes" to the question being posed. I'm not so sure he is in trouble, but he could get there.

New York Post Editorial

I suppose it would be okay to editorialize on an editorial.

The editorial says to forget the 51st state. That much I agree with. But there's more. It also says there should be a common market. Hmmm. Maybe.

It would appear that the bulk of the population would prefer a Euro-centric type existence, as opposed to an American one. There's a lot of those type already in the USA, so there's that going for it. The common market idea was a European one.

Should we strive for that? Not if we end up with a bloated centralized un-elected state that supercedes the sovereignty of the states of which it is composed. A common market could be replaced with a trading treaty. But we have one of those already. Therefore, there is no need.

Solar power beamed from space! New start up demonstrates its tech.

Perhaps this can power a LOX-LEO spacecraft.

If gases could be harvested on the edge of space, as opposed to launching it from the ground, it would reduce the number of launches needed to power a spacecraft to destinations far away-- such as Mars.

So I jipped it from the latest What about it video embedded below:

Oh, Canada

3/28/25:

Via CTH, I noticed this video from our "friends" up north. Once again, it appears that they are taking the exactly wrong-headed approach towards Trump. Instead of negotiating a better tariff structure and security arrangements within NATO, these jackasses are taking a hostile and aggressive tone toward Trump. Trump has endured this kind of thing from the beginning and is becoming stronger all the time. It would seem that these people would learn, but they don't learn. So be it.

2/28/25:

Boom! Here's how Canada is totally screwing up. Told by a Canadian, so there.

2/24/25:

They really ARE screwing up. That's why they'll lose.

If these people were what they think they are, this wouldn't have happened in the first place. Reality hits hard, bro.

2/23/25:

If the pattern holds, Trump will win again

Maybe the pattern won't hold. But let's identify the pattern. This requires something that Trump's adversaries don't do, which is to actually think. The way the Canadians are acting, and the Liberals here in the USA are acting, he's going to destroy them. He's going to destroy them while not even breaking a sweat.

But Trump had to get the nomination in 2016. If he didn't get the nomination back then, he doesn't win. If he didn't get the nomination in 2016, then he wouldn't have gotten it two more times. The point is that the GOP Establishment had the first crack at him, and failed miserably. Then the Democrats got a crack at him, and supposedly beat him in 2020. But in doing so, they are in the process of destroying themselves. That's a big hint right there. Trump gets his enemies to implode.

How does he do that? It's not like he's changed over the years. Take a look on YouTube. He hasn't exactly been hiding out all these years. If you look at what he said in the past, it was the same thing that he's been saying all along. Think about that. For forty years, they've been asking him about America and possibly running for President, and he's saying the same thing the whole time. But they couldn't stop him when he finally said something different, and that he WOULD run. They have no clue about how to handle the guy. No clue at all. You'd think after all that time to think about it, these guys could do a lot better, but they couldn't. They still can't.

In trying to stop Trump, they just destroyed themselves. Trump got them to do that. But how? Does anybody really know how he does it? Evidently not, but you can watch the way they act, and it does appear that their reaction is what causes them to fail. Trump gets them to react in self-destructive ways.

The Democrats have destroyed their credibility. The GOP Establishment has destroyed its credibility. Now he's got Canada doing it.

The result will be the same. Canada will fail. Trump will win out.

Why? I think he drives them bonkers. In a world like we live in, going bonkers is the way to disaster. Trump is driving the Canucks out of their friggin' minds. They may not know it now, but they are on the way down. That is, unless they are somehow different that everybody else Trump has conquered. The Canucks have given every indication that they've got no clue, either.

The fatal flaw

The video doesn't say exactly what the fatal flaw is. Maybe because there are plenty of flaws in that sphere. The one that hasn't gotten the play that the other have is featured, so maybe that's what it is. It is the planet wide dust storms that frequent the place every five years or so.

Such a problem will make solar power useless for weeks at a time. In that case, Mars will need nuclear power. But you don't hear about that much, if at all.

10:30 am:

Here's a piece from the so-called "Moderate Voice".  What is "moderate" about this???  There is just one amorphous mob called the Democrat party now.  They aren't capable of moderation.  The author is Dana Milbank, who promised to eat his own words if Trump got the GOP nomination in 2016.  Evidently, he is also capable of being WRONG, and crazy ( his own words).

He's not promising to eat his own words this time.

9:00 am:

Here is a long essay that expounds upon the issue.  I didn't bother reading all of it.  Why not?  It is probably too long, and besides, the general idea is stated early in the essay.  The rest is just more examples of the same.

6.5.19:

( an old laugh-in gag )

But it is no joke.  There is one good reason to fight back against the left.  The left will claim that you have no right to judge, but the left doesn't apply that standard to themselves.  So, why can't you judge?

Not Christian?  Somehow, I think this is meant to disarm those who would fight back otherwise.  It is an Alinsky tactic.  ( Alinsky said to make your opponents live up to their own standards. ) After all, if you judge, then how can you be a good Christian?  Doesn't it say in the New Testament "judge not, and be not judged"?  However, there is a moral bargain made between those who say that you cannot judge in any case.  That would mean nobody judges nobody.  For if you cannot, then neither can they.  But if they can, then so can you.  If they break the moral bargain, then all bets should be off.

Generally speaking, it is weak to allow yourself to pushed around by bullies.  If the left has gotten this far, it is with bullying tactics.  The best way to cope with the bully is to stand up to him.

Blackberry moment?

3/24/25:

Blackberry? I don't think so. They're already thinking way ahead.

3/23/25:

The phrase "moment" is currently being parroted all over the liberal sphere these days.

The time to seize the moment is to turn their plans on their head. How? Through innovation. Tesla has not reached its potential. It's time that it did, or fold up their tents.

How Texas joined the Union, and some modern developments

There's talk about adding new states these days. The territories aren't even in US jurisdiction, but that hasn't stopped it before. An example of that is the annexation of Texas.

By the way, all of this is based upon memory of how it was taught in school back in the day when I was going to school in Texas.

Texas was annexed by JOINT RESOLUTION in the US Congress. Sam Houston preferred a treaty, but a treaty could not pass the US Senate. Indeed, an annexation resolution passed by only ONE vote. There was a sectional controversy going on in those days, and the North opposed it on the grounds that Texas would join the Union as a slave state. Not to mention the fact that Mexico threatened war if the USA annexed Texas.

The Resolution passed anyway, and was sent to the Republic of Texas for approval. There was a popular vote taken on it, and the people of Texas approved. But what may not be commonly known, the President of Texas, Anson Jones, worked with the Mexicans to add an option to the annexation vote. Mexico offered to recognize Texas' independence if Texas would not join the American Union. The people of Texas voted the Mexican offer down, something like two to one. Upon annexation, there was a war, and Mexico lost. The Mexicans also lost a lot of territory in the West which eventually became the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and not to mention the parts that Texas claimed ( which was a bit of stretch) that included the modern states of Colorado, Kansas and Wyoming.

There was significant consequences of the annexation. Civil War came just 15 years after Texas entered the Union. The annexation aggravated an already touchy situation in the United States. That's because a lot of territory was below the Mason-Dixon line, and the South wanted more slave states. California joined the Union as a free state. This was one of many factors why the South wanted to secede from the Union. They were losing power in the Congress. In particular, they were losing power in the US Senate.

So what's the point? The addition of new states by Joint Resolution is precedented. It can happen again. It can also bring about a lot of unintended consequences.

Greenland cannot be a state. As for Canada, if any part of it joins, it's going to have political consequences that may not be forseeable at the moment. If Alberta joined as a territory, that might be a better option. Statehood could be decided later. Even though it is legal under Canadian law to leave their union, there would be a significant question of what to do about the lands in Alberta, and who owns those lands. Would Alberta control all their territories, or would the Canadian government claim those lands?

There might be a possibility of Alberta joining, but at the moment, I think their answer to that proposition would still be a "no". I'd be just fine if that were the case. However, if Alberta joined, then who knows what will come next. More provinces joining up? I wouldn't like that one. Too many unanwered questions.

The View from the looney bin

It isn't mentioned explicitly here, but I think a lot of what is being complained about is the recent shutdown fight. The GOP always lost these fights, but this time the Republicans won. That fact has these women having a big meltdown, especially Sunny Hostin.

Marxist Paradigm--

No sincere conservative should use it.

The so-called "political spectrum" does not exist. There seems to be a literature about this. It isn't unique here, but I never claimed to have come up with it myself. I credit Ronald Reagan's "The Speech" for it. There's no left versus right, but only a struggle for freedom--to paraphrase The Gipper.

If you don't want your Tesla, I'll take it off your hands

A humorous thought there. These people wish to convince Tesla owners that it is a bad idea to own their cars. If you are convinced that owning a Tesla is really bad, I'll be happy to take it off your hands.

But I won't give you anything for your car. It might be worthwhile to have one if it costs me nothing. Otherwise, I wouldn't have one. But getting one for no cost, that may be good enough for me to take the leap. It would have to be nearby as well. I won't expend the effort or expense to go get one which is a long way from here.

This is a joke of course. But who knows? There are people out there who would believe anything.

Bill Maher: "Game over" for Dems

6:36 PM:

The discussion goes into the areas that leave me exasperated. For instance, the Ezra Klein fellow said that the GOP is autocratic. Well, I don't know about the GOP, but as far as I'm concerned, the autocrats are the Democrats. But they claim that the GOP is autocratic. I don't vote for autocrats. They're not autocrats, the GOP'ers. Most of the time, they're just Democrat wannabes.

If there's any reason the Dems lose, it is because they are in some sort of alternate universe, which is where nobody else is. I'm not sure that they actually get many legitimate votes. Those who vote for them are as deluded as they are, or they are being arm-twisted in some way into voting for them. Democrat jurisdictions are like totalitarian regimes that vote in large blocks for the those in power, because if they don't, they know that they'll be punished. The punishment is doled out from amongst their own, not the opposition. The GOP is qualitatively different from the Democrats. Calling them autocrats is just more of their absurdity. Their absurdity is why they lose.

7:15 PM:

This is another case where you might ask if liberals are evil or stupid, because what they say is false. If they are knowingly peddling falsehoods, then that's evil. But if they really don't know any better, then they're just stupid. Either way is bad.

Everything you're dying to know about Lee Harvey Oswald

Why a military takeover of Canada won't work

Wow. If you look at the comment section, they are Canadians who are quite hostile to the idea. But I'm not concerned about them. Instead, actually watch the video.

Canada will have to be broken down into at least (10) ten states. That's twenty Senators. This would likely be a liberal bloc. Steve Forbes exaggerates the possibilities, but it would be clear that the American quality of our country would be overly diluted in the Senate. That would spill over into the legislation that could come out of Congress. That would not be good. That's not acceptable, period.

But once again, I think that Trump is not being literal about taking over Canada. The Canadian response so far shows once again how people cannot handle the guy. A reasonable Canadian response would have been to negotiate the terms of the relationship that already exists. Ten to one, his discussions with their leaders got responses like what could be seen in the comment section. I think that brought out the dismissive tone of Trump. You cannot disprespect the guy without getting a blunt response right back out of him.

A more realistic thing would be to force Canada into a puppet state relationship. Canada doesn't have the power to stop this if that is what is truly wanted. It might be truly wanted if the Canucks don't change their hostile attitude. In other words, offering an equal footing in our own councils is TOO DAMNED NICE. They might have to be put back into their place.

Be careful what you wish for.

Some Democrats wanted Trump to win the GOP nomination in 2016. I'm sure that they regret that now. Trump turned out to be far more formidable than they imagined. This could always happen. If you oppose Sanders and AOC, then don't wish for any success for them on any level. Work to obtain that outcome. Otherwise, you could be the author of your own doom.

Joy Reid: "Canada would win a war against USA"

3/21/25, 7:27 AM:

Comment:

Wars are unpredictable. It all depends upon what is the objective. She seems to take Trump literally. She seems to think that the USA is willing to go out and conquer Canada. I see it as a generous offer. Trump believes that Canada would be better off as a state than as a country. Trumps' rhetoric is an offer, not a threat.

If conquest was the intent, then who would win? Such an objective would require a pretty strong grip on power at the executive level in the USA. As it now stands, I'd say it wouldn't go quickly enough to do it within Trump's timeframe.

However, the USA beat Germany and Japan in World War II ( with the help of Allies in Europe, but mostly alone against Japan). Canada doesn't have the means to beat the USA in an ass kicking contest. If Germany and Japan couldn't do it, Canada sure as hell can't do it.

Canada cannot win an all out war with the USA. But a certain kind of war might be winnable for them. However, conditions could change that might make any war unwinnable for Canada. They'd be advised not to provoke such a war. Canada seems to want to be enemies with the US. In such a scenario, they'd lose BIG TIME.

On the face of it, Joy Reid seems ridiculous. An ill-advised kind of war would be a disaster for both sides. It might look like Russia v Ukraine. Ukraine cannot win an ass-kicking contest, but they sure can make victory a Pyrrhic one for Russia. It would be odd for Trump to start such a war with Canada. I don't think that is his intent.

10:10 AM:

Who the hell would want an actual shooting war here? Cui bono? The whole scenario is absurd.

Is this a scam?

Yep.

Impossible to get to Mars?

Getting there may not be the problem. Getting there and back alive and well is indeed a problem. Therefore, I think the first missions will be suicide missions. If you complicate matters with the insistence that everybody must come back alive and well, then it might be impossible with the tech we have now.

But someday, not long from now, it will be possible. I think so, because of the rapid advances in robotics. Robots could make a human presence possible. They'll be sent in any case, as Musk said he will send his own robots to Mars. The robots could prepare the war for a short term existence on Mars, but it will take a lot of missions, and a lot of commitment to make the whole thing viable for anything but short term suicide missions. A civilization of over a million people seems like a pipe dream. However, a highly dangerous mission in the near term is likely. Maybe not before the end of the decade, but early in the next.

Are we missing the point?

Who is being targeted here? Musk? Perhaps so, but they are also targeting people who have bought these cars, are they not? The people who bought these cars are now afraid to be associated with Tesla. They wish to make people people afraid to buy these cars, or to be seen in them.

There was never any economic reason to buy these cars. People who bought them were virtue signalling their "enviromental sensitivity". Now they want to take all that "virtue" out of owning and driving these vehicles, and to replace that "virtue" with hatred and fear. And the effect is to punish Elon Musk. Maybe they'd like to kill Musk, too.

The effect is to take out the guy who made electric cars feasible, when all the prior efforts to make electric cars cool had failed. What they are really punishing is Musk's wishes to follow his own course. If he made cars that a whole lot of people would be better off owning, then they would also be punishing the whole world. Then why? Just because he defied THEM? What makes THEM so high and mighty? Hell hath no fury like the liberal scorned.

These people are trying to take away the people's right to choose what they want to drive, even if the reasons are silly. Tesla can stand or fall on its merits, not because they pissed off a bunch of leftist assholes. It was, after all, only leftist assholes who bought the damned things in the first place. Whoop-de-doo. They punish themselves. Damn idiots.

Believe what you will

3/20/25:

The assassination of JFK is in the news again. It so happens that I was perusing the Roku channel, and I found the Quantum Leap episodes that were referred to in the video below.

What to write about it, then? That is, what to write about the TV shows that were aired in the 1990's. I'd say too many people worry about it, meaning the assassination. Sometimes a thing is what it appears to be, and nothing more. People want to see more in it than what was there. That's my take.

Kennedy was shot. So was Reagan. So was Trump. People do things. People believe things. I don't believe Kennedy was assassinated by some grand plot. So I think that this post has aged well. At least, it seems that way because my opinion still remains the same as it was back then. People will believe what they want. So be it.

10/15/22:

Comment:

The controversy surrounding the events of the JFK assassination has taken on a life of its own. It may never die. As for the video, I recall watching the show when it was on teevee some thirty years ago. It was about something that happened almost thirty years before that show aired. So now, that event is almost sixty years old.

People have written books about the assassination. The one I've got was written by Vincent Bugliosi. Bugliosi didn't think there was a conspiracy, and gave ample evidence that it was not. As for Oliver Stone's movie, there were a few scenes that were made up from thin air. Bugliosi seems more credible to me.

My viewpoint is a lot like Bellisario's when he says that people "want to believe in it". You hear an awful lot about conspiracy theories these days. Conspiracy theories can cut both ways. Maybe we should look beyond the conspiracy theory allegations, and look at from the viewpoint of "cui bono". Who benefits from the use of a conspiracy theory for some advantage? It goes both ways. Those who set forth a conspiracy theory, and those who try to refute it.

The best way to refute a conspiracy theory is with facts. But there's that problem with the desire to believe a conspiracy theory mentioned above. Facts themselves can be disputed, or denied.

I've checked into it ( the JFK assassination conspiracy theory) about as much as I'd like to. At some point, you have to decide for yourself what you believe. I don't believe there was one with respect to JFK. As for the latest being floated about and denied today ( with regards to the 2020 election), there hasn't been enough facts that have come to the fore to put it to rest one way or another. One thing is certain: there's no way Brandon got 81 million votes. No way. Interesting to note who is trying to capitalize politically upon it, and who is trying to suppress any honest investigation of it.

More Background on Judge James Boasberg - The Fight Continues

Last Refuge

This one stinks to high heaven. Chief Justice Roberts could be implicated in some crooked sheet, main.

Why the left must be destroyed politically

So now it's terrorism for you lefties?

Isn't it a bit strange that the conservatives are protecting the once lefty ( and maybe still lefty ) folks who bought their Teslas for virtue signalling, but are now paying the price from their brethren who are now torching their pricey electric vehicles?

That's why it was NEVER about the environment. It wasn't then, and it isn't now. For if they cared about the environment, they wouldn't be trying to trash the leading manufacturer of electric vehicles that will "save the Earth".

Maybe some hardcore lefty libtards will wake the f**k up from their self-induced coma. Looks like ONE of them isn't going to wake up.

Let's make a deal

Hills to Die On: Democrats know how to pick 'em

3/19/25:

Democrats are provoking this, but why?

A theory would involve Marxism. They'd prefer a dictatorship that they could overthrow, even if it meant that they would have to do a lot to create one by their own provocations. You could save the Republic, but you'd have to destroy them as a party in order to do it.

3/18/25:

American Thinker, by Monica Showalter

What is it about Democrats and their urge to inflict criminals and terrorists upon us?

In their quest to Get Trump on immigration, which is probably his strongest point with the public, they've picked three migrant cause célèbres...

Now Chief Justice Roberts is tossing his hat into this ring. It's a mistake. How's Roberts going to look when he has to either support these rogue judges, or support common sense and the public interest?

A space station manufacturer's dream

3/19/25:

A recent post on Aldrin Cyclers would provide an opportunity for a bit of comparison between the concepts. There's a pdf file associated with the concept, which Marcus House mentioned on his video about the cyclers. A point of concern cropped up. That's the high delta-v required for the Mars side. If it takes so much delta-v to get back from Mars, then it calls into question the usefulness of the concept.

The system will require re-fueling stations on each side of the journey back and forth between the cyclers and the travelers' locations. If you are going to need re-fueling stations anyway, then why use a cycler at all?

Instead you can use the concept that I've been fleshing out with these posts. It only takes a small delta-v to get back and forth between a Deimos station and a Earth-Moon LaGrange point. Re-fueling and cargo exchanges could occur at these locations on their journeys back and forth between Earth and Mars.

Therefore, I'm souring a bit on the Aldrin Cycler concept. It doesn't offer enough of a benefit to justify the cost.  You'll need the re-fueling stations in any event, and you could build space stations at the re-fueling stations that would enable a crew to recover from their long journey.  Spin it up to an Earth Gravity and harden it with shielding.  You can do most of the same things as with the cycler, and it would probably be no more challenging to get the facilities built out than with the cyclers.

11/14/24:

An idea here is to utilize Jeff Greason's strategy of "island hopping" as a colonization strategy. (Mentioned on an earlier update of 4/17/24, which is also highlighted in red text--scroll down to it, please.)

The idea is to shuttle back and forth between High Earth orbit and the Lunar orbit planned for use in the Artemis program. You could launch from the surface of the moon more massive cargoes than from the Earth. Then you could transfer the cargo to High Earth Orbit in order to refuel Starships which are going outbound.

The high orbits would be analogous to the "islands" mentioned by Greason in his talk on youtube. It would mean much less fuel would be needed in order to transfer the cargo from space "islands", as opposed to launching them from Earth. You could use these islands as fueling stations. Refueling means deeper space missions, and of course, ultimately a colonizaton effort could be staged from these "islands".

6/5/24:

One way to deal with the challenges of long term spaceflight is to hibernate ( if that's possible).

The idea is to reduce the amount of resources, but it could also be useful for psychological purposes. "Cabin fever" can result from being cooped up inside of a rocket ship for several months or even years. Going into hibernation could not only reduce consumption of resources, but it could also deal with a lot of time.

I was also thinking that a person could enter a highly protected area that would necessitate not moving around much. It would be like a lead "coffin". A highly dense material could be used to block gamma rays, and help prevent radiation exposure. The key would be to not move around. The most efficient use of highly dense materials would involve keeping a person immobile, as mobility would require much more material for protection.

As can be seen in some of the updates, I continue to research this space station concept. The current iteration involves a 68 meter in diameter torus along the lines of the VERA stations that I began with. At this size, the amount of artificial gravity is minimized to the least amount that would be needed for adjustment.

As for making it a "coffin", one might use different materials. One cannot consume lead. However lead is very effective at stopping gamma rays. You'd need a lot more of everything else.

Perhaps you can make the station out of gingerbread, but I am kidding around. The tweet below discusses human hibernation for space travel.

end update of 6/2/24 post

6/2/24:

It's all rather boring, but better than reading this gawdawful news. Something to divert my time for a moment so I can forget stuff that I'd rather not think about right now. Anyway, a Delta-V map that shows how little delta v is needed for Mars transfer and Mars capture orbit once you get far enough away from Earth ( but not quite far enough away to escape). Delta-V in kilometers per sec (kms).

If you were to park some stations there, and fly back and forth between Earth without committing to Mars, you can stage your trip out there. Perhaps at EML-4 or EML-5 would be more handy. Get far enough out there, and it doesn't take much to send you onward to Mars. However, once you're committed, it's going to be a long trip.

A fully re-fueled Statship may be capable of a delta-v of 7.75 kms. That's with a full load. Tugging a big space station may slow that down a bit.

Delta-V map: Earth capture orbit to Mars capture orbit

Artificial gravity calculations

In your space station, you'd need to rotate it a certain speed in order to obtain some artificial gravity. Above are some possible sizes by radius, and how many rpm needed for the approximation to one Earth gravity. Rounded to two decimal points. Sizes in meters.

You may want to guestimate about which size and speed you'd figure is best. Speeds above 2 RPM are probably not desirable. Indeed, the slower the better, but that means a much bigger station. The bigger it is, the less feasible it would be to build it out. Note: chart show half rpm, it should be two.  6/3/24:   Note:  Now corrected.  6/4/24:  A few more adjustments.

end update of 5/29/24 post

5/29/24:

Ooops! Looks like somebody "busted" the idea that began this little brainstorm of mine. This idea of mine began with this space station as the center of a Mars colonization effort and other such things. No effort was made on this blog to critically analyze it or anything like that. I was somewhat skeptical, but eventually I accepted it ( as a manner of argument ) all as legit. Maybe it isn't.

Seems like many years ago, I came across something similar. I merely assumed that it was a legit thing then too. The tech needed to make it a reality didn't exist.

SpaceX may be changing all that. With Starship's ability to lift large amounts of cargo per launch, and do it at reasonable prices, it would seem to open up the possibiity of something like a space manufacturer to build out such space stations. If it turns out that this guy is not such a person, but an imposter, then it is an embarrassing error. But it doesn't negate the possibility of such stations being possible to be made. Perhaps not by this guy, but somebody could.

end update of 5/28/24 post:

5/28/24:

An idea came to me recently, so I guess I'll write it up. Why not?

If one were to park a space station in high Earth orbit, it wouldn't take much delta-v to get into a Hohlman transfer to Mars. And not much more F delta-v from there gets you into high Mars orbit. So here's the idea: Make a couple hundred of these Vera stations that can hold a thousand passengers apiece, and park them into high Earth orbit. Another hundred could get placed into high Mars orbit. Every time a launch window opens, a hundred stations are sent back to high Earth orbit, and a hundred stations are sent to high Mars orbit.

A few starships could go out to the high orbital locations and bring the passengers enroute to Mars, or back from Mars. The new nuclear pulse type rocket engine could provide the transport of the Vera stations. The Starships could be positioned near each planet in order to serve the stations. In other words, you don't need the extra mass, so why bring it along? Plus the Starships need a lot of fuel. The 5000 ISP nuclear rockets won't need much fuel at all.

If you want to, you could attach the 100 Vera stations into one mega station with 100k passengers. Their mass could protect against cosmic radiation. Spin them up for artificial gravity. The passengers should be fairly safe in such an arrangement.

I worked out the mass requirements for the delta-v, assuming 1000 tons of mass for the station, including supplies. A modest delta-v didn't require all that much fuel---25 tons. This gave a mass fraction of 97.5%. It's usually 97.5% for the fuel alone if the nuclear option is not used. So that should show the advantage of such an approach.

What used to seem pretty fanciful, now seems to be within the realm of possibilities. Not that it would happen anyway, but it is fun to think about it.

end update of 5/19/24 post

5/19/24:

It may well be wise to be modest in one's own speculations. There could be many, many complications in the way of such a project.

But speculation doesn't hurt anything. On the other hand, a little knowledge could be a dangerous thing. So, do you like danger?

I've been checking into something here with regard to calculating delta-v for trips to asteroids. There are a few things to think about. A delta-v may not be a show stopper. Another show stopper could be with the launch windows. Or it could be that and some other thing. After all, it is rocket science.

At the moment, a trip to a near-Earth type asteroid may involve no more difficulty than landing on the moon. Maybe it could be less. However, setting up a station on any asteroid may involve some complications. It is, after all, rocket science.

If the complication is launch window availability, then it may pay to have a lot of asteroids on a visit list. Then you can fly off to the one that is closest at hand. Sounds simple, but there could be more complications. There always seems to be. That is all.

end update of 5/17/24 post:

5/17/24:

Instead of making an O'Neill cylinder out of 433 Eros, make hundreds, or thousands of space stations out of it.

It can take the materials in situ: mine them, fabricate them, and assemble them in place. Then launch them to other asteroids, to do the same.

Each potentially hazardous asteroid can become a resource. It can also pay for itself if it finds enough gold, silver, and platinum while mining for base metals.

Each new station can be tasked with finding new opportunities. Multiple objectives could be attained with minimal effort. It could be done with robots, like these.

Somebody could become quite rich.

end update of 4/17/24 post:

4/17/24:

Perhaps this could be built as a cycler. Launch once and it will stay there forever. Instead of flying to a planet, you'd fly to and from this cycler.

These could be Jeff Greason's "islands" for the island hopping strategy for Mars colonization. You'd be making your own islands.

end update of the 6/22/23 post

Update of post made on -- 6-22-23

There are several ideas for a new space station. Of all of the ones that have been seen here, the Space Gateway is the one in which holds the most capability. It is also the biggest. There would be enormous amount of space that could house a lot of people. It would also take the most money, because of the extraordinary amount of material that would have to be launched up to orbit.

But the same could be said for Elon Musk's plans. A smaller number of Starships, plus a new spaceship could be better than the current plan. It wouldn't take much to make the Gateway station into a space ship. The only things needed would be some engines. If the Starship provided the engines, then it could be towed to its destinations.

One of the Gateway stations mentioned appears to able to house 1000 people. Ten of these, towed by Starships, could transport 10,000 people per flight window to Mars. A hundred trips could transport a million. A million is what Musk plans to send to Mars. But each window is two years, so that would take over two centuries. Therefore, more stations would be needed. Ten times as many should get the job done.

In situ resourcing could cut the launch costs for each station. It would be better to launch from the Moon or Mars than from the Earth. Consequently, the ability to make the materials necessary in order to construct such stations, needs to go off-world. But the Gateway presentation said as much already.

The stations could be like Islands in the sky. Each Island could be a waystation, or hub, for transporting people and materials back and forth to destinations.

There are many possible destinations between Earth and Mars. The LaGrange points come to mind.

Who and how it would be funded is the key. Space mining, manufacturing, and tourism are possibilities. Whole new industries could be born.

here's the original post...

Not to be too negative, but this guy is getting way, way out front of the game. Big thinking means big bucks. Where's the money going to come from in order to get these space stations off the ground? True, I didn't watch the whole thing (not as of this writing), but gee whiz. This guy thinks BIG.

On the positive side, I think this is the right way to think about going to far away places, like Mars. Put an engine cluster on the space stations he's talking about, and bingo... You could transport many people this way to an off world location like Mars.

House divided cannot stand

Liberalism is dividing the country against itself. One or the other must go. That is to say, liberalism must go, or its opposition must go. By the way, LIBERALS think that way. That is the basis for cancel culture. If they won't tolerate opposition, then why should WE?
