BAE Electromagnetic Railgun

The thought occurred to me that something like this could be used as a propulsion device in space.  They would fire a projectile into space and the recoil could propel the spacecraft.

Two problems come to mind, which would by no means mean that this would be the only problems.

Anyway, number one would be heat.   If you use the railgun to propel ice, the ice would melt.  You'd want the ice to melt after you sent it out, but not before.

The energy problem could be solved by a nuclear reactor.  Heh, heh.  Preferably, a small one.
