What makes something popular, revisited ( part 3 )

Maybe this can become a series of posts.  What makes a thing popular?  I recall a book I read by Zimbardo, which said that "liking" something or what have you, is one of those knee-jerk type responses that manipulators use to their advantage.

To illustrate that point, a cartoon was included, which showed a car salesman wearing a bird costume in order to sell something to birds.  I think it doesn't take much imagination to see the technique and why it works.  For example, he wouldn't have much success selling to the birds if he dressed up in a cat costume.

People respond to those things that they like.  It works on a knee-jerk, or subconscious level.  But if you want to rise above the unthinking, you may want to reconsider responding to your own knee-jerk responses to what- have-you.  If you do this, it will be much more difficult for the manipulators to get you to do their bidding.

If people would just use their heads a little better, the world may be a bit better than what it is.
