Racial politics, pure and simple. The article goes on to show that Thompson, who is black, supports the same policy that he is condemning.
New York City used to be a lot more violent. That got turned around. Maybe New Yorkers have forgotten what that was like.
There was one problem with this article, if I may be a bit critical. It claims that Zimmerman "confronted" Martin. The evidence didn't show that conclusively one way or another. It may well have been that it was Martin who confronted Zimmerman.
A small quibble, it seems. However, if the media reported this way back then, we probably wouldn't even have heard about Martin and Zimmerman, and there wouldn't have been any trial.
