Whatever you may think of the TeeVee series known as the Chosen, I included it because I think it is key to understanding the message.
The "hired hand" cares nothing for the sheep. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. So there you have it. That is how you can make the distinction. That is, if your brain is still working.
Whoever takes money for their services is just a hired hand, in my opinion. This is not about money.
