One against four isn't a fair fight indeed. There was this dude during the Antebellum Period, who was an abolitionist. His name was Cassius Clay. It was said that he got in a fight with four, and held up his end.

Does anyone believe that?

Sure. There are Generals in past wars who won their battles when there's no way they should've. There was a post here about how Caesar beat the Gauls. No way Caesar should've won that, but he did. So, yeah. I think it could be done. Odds are against anyone who tries it, though.
