I don't get this latest controversy. What was the purpose of this- to discredit somebody? Did it succeed?

Oh, so here's an explanation: In Apologizing for Global Warming Hoax, Peter Gleick Blames His Victims
It was indeed an attempt to discredit "climate deniers". He admits to fraud while doing it. Why am I not surprised?
