Don't be the guy who gets the flag for retaliation against the cheap shot

With respect to the most recent post, a quick observation and a thought. Pardon the NFL metaphor.

It seems that there was some talk on the Democrat side that they would try to provoke Trump into saying or doing something that wouldn't help him. Could it be, with all this lawfare, and phony accusations, that they are merely provoking him to say something intemperate and unwise?

Therefore, if one understands the tactic, one shouldn't fall victim to it. If they try to be provocative, just shrug it off.

Indeed, casting it as nothing more than a Hail Mary, may be the best way to handle it. But someone like me would want to make them pay for trying it.

You have to be careful about not giving them exactly what they want. The temptation is to clobber somebody who continually tries to provoke you into a fight. But it is always the one who retaliates as being the one who gets punished. The trick is to get the other guy punished for what is truly his own fault for trying to pick the fight. That means getting out in front of it, and show it for what it is.

When Jimmy Carter did that in that debate, when Carter was being mean,  Ronald Reagan had that great response---"there you go again".
